What is a Microwave Convection Oven?

It would be easy to guess that a convection microwave oven is a combination of a convection oven and a microwave oven and that’s definitely the simple answer.  There is more to the combination than just that though.  In a way, a microwave convection oven is more than the sum of its parts.

A microwave oven offers quick-heating of food, while a convection oven cooks the food from the outside too, giving it a brown color. There is also a difference in the heating system of a microwave and a convection oven. A convection oven relies on a technology heating elements create heat that is distributed inside the oven with the help of the air movement created by the fan. The heat generated inside an oven is redistributed in every part of the interior. It ensures that the food is not only cooked, but it is browned on the outside.

It results in steam generation, which cooks the food.  However, the steam doesn’t brown the food, it only cooks it.  A microwave generates heat within the food without actually creating heat directly inside the oven.

There is also a difference between heating food in a traditional oven and a convection oven. The former does not heat food uniformly, as the heat is emitted from just one direction. A convection oven on the other hand, offers even heating even at a low temperature.

More Than the Sum of Its Parts

A combination microwave offers the features of both a microwave and a convection oven in a single appliance. It can be used as a microwave, an oven and also as a combination of both. When you opt for the convection oven mode, you get all its features like baking, broiling, browning, and in some cases even grilling.  So microwave convection ovens will come in handy when you want to add that crisp to your leftover pizza or make the garlic bread crumbly and brown!

When you use the microwave-only feature, you benefit from quick heating. So it’s great for times when you are famished or when you have your friends waiting for you over dinner and you need to finish cooking the meal quickly. If you are not running short on time, heat your food using the microwave-only mode and then reheat it for a few seconds in the convection oven mode for food that does not have cold bits in it.

Combination mode can be used in two ways.  You can use both features at the same time for a period of time you specify in order to quickly cook food and brown it at the same time.  Cooking withWhat Is a Microwave Convection Oven Panasonic NN-CD989S Front View both the microwave and convection oven at the same time can produce quicker cooking times than either oven by itself.  The other way to use the combination of the microwave and convection oven is to use built-in programming like is available on Panasonic Convection Microwaves.  Not every microwave has programming built-in designed to make use of both modes in such a way to produce the best results.  Many do have programming and for those ovens that do, you can actually program both parts of the oven and the oven will automatically switch between microwave and convection oven modes in order to cook your food just right.

Microwave Convection Oven Advantages

Compared to a regular oven, convection ovens have the advantage of being smaller, heating up faster, and using less energy.  The combination of a microwave and convection oven gives you the energy savings of the convection oven along with the faster cooking speeds of a microwave.

Countertop microwaves like a microwave convection oven are more compact than a traditional oven or an individual microwave and convection oven separately.  If you need to save counter space, but still want the benefits of both types of ovens, then a microwave convection oven is a great choice.

A combo microwave convection oven is also easier to clean than a traditional oven and has less space to clean than individual microwave and convection ovens separately.

If you bought a convection oven to save energy for those food items you don’t want or need to cook in your traditional oven and also bought a microwave for those food items that lend themselves to microwave cooking, it would cost you more than a combination microwave and convection oven.

When you look at the energy savings, oven performance, compact size, easier cleaning, cost savings, it’s easy to justify the investment in a countertop microwave like a combination microwave and convection oven.
